This ratio reversed very quickly through the Early Fifties with 13,710 hardtops built in 1951 compared to 2,911 convertibles. The 1949 Buick Roadmasters were characterized by their long sweeping hoods which housed the Buick straight eight engine, designed by Joseph D. Turlay, who later also designed the first Buick V-8, and the famous V-6. Besides the body-length fenders, panoramic curved windshield, one piece wraparound bumpers and the teeth like grill, the most recognizable feature was probably the chrome-ringed “VentiPorts” on both sides of the front quarter panels which served as heat outlets for the engine compartment. The Roadmaster series got 4 VentiPorts instead of 3 as on the other series. Dynaflow, Durk’s first automatic transmission, was also available on the Roadmaster as an option. Despite mixed reviews, the Dynaflow transmission was equipped in 85 percent of the new Buicks sold by 1954.
