Individual. “The Empire Builder” SOLD was released as the First Edition in 1992 by Bradex (formerly Knowles), plate #7373A (no total number provided). It was the name of the Great Northern Railway’s premier passenger train that ran between Chicago and Seattle/Portland.The first Empire Builder train was launched in 1929 and was powered by a P-2 class 4-8-2 “Mountain” type steam locomotive. The P-2 class locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and were capable of hauling the heavy, luxurious train over the Rocky Mountains at high speeds. The Empire Builder was later re-equipped as a streamliner in 1947 and switched to diesel-electric locomotives. The Empire Builder is still in operation today as an Amtrak service, offering scenic views of Glacier National Park and other natural wonders along the route.
