AV600-112 No 112 Squadron Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk cover signed Squadron Leader Neville Duke OBE DSO DFC** AFC This cover started back in 2003 having had a conversation about the RAF in the Western Desert with Neville Duke when comparing the amount of items to relating the various theatres of war during WWII. Always being inspired by Neville Duke, and also a childhood obsession with aircraft with shark’s teeth, I felt something should be done and Neville kindly signed the covers during 2005 and ‘was very pleased to do so’ which made the whole project worthwhile. Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk GA-F has been selected to appear in the artwork for the reason Neville Duke flew. We have chosen to show it in the best desert fashion with dust flying everywhere – making a stunning bit of artwork. The artist is Ross Wardle, who was one of the Matchbox Kits artists before the company dropped out of kit market. This cover is handsigned by Squadron Leader Neville Duke OBE DSO DFC** AFC, who was a pilot with No 112 Squadron in the Western Desert. The cover bears BFPS 2847 postmark for the 65th Anniversary of the flight of the production Curtiss P-40 Warhawk 14 April 2005. The postmark shows a No 112 Squadron aircraft GA-F (also on the cover and an aircraft Duke flew) (203 Signed, Numbered and Certified). Squadron Leader Neville Duke OBE DSO DFC** AFC Born on 11 January 1922 in Tunbridge, Kent. On leaving school in 1939 he worked for 6 months as an auctioneer and estate. Initially he tried to join the Fleet Air Arm, but was accepted by the RAF instead in June 1940. He was commissioned at 58 OTU, Grangemouth in February 1941, and was then posted to 92 Squadron in April, operating over France from Biggin Hill, flying on occasion as wingman to ‘Sailor’ Malan. In October he was posted to the Middle East, where he joined 112 Squadron in November. On 30 November he was shot down and on 5 December was shot down again . By the end of February 1942 Duke had achieved 8 confirmed and 3 probable victories. He was awarded a DFC in March and then served at the Fighter School at El Ballal in the Canal Zone as an instructor until 18 November, when he rejoined 92 Squadron, which was now also in the Desert. He became a flight commander in January 1943 and was awarded a DSO in March and by the end of his second tour had added a further 14 victories to his total. Promoted Squadron Leader he was posted to 73 OTU at Abu Sueir as CFI. In March 1944 he commenced his third tour as commanding officer of 145 Squadron in Italy, now flying Spitfire VIIIs. With this unit he claimed 5 further victories in May, receiving a second bar to his DFC. On 7 June his aircraft was hit by Flak and he baled out into Lake Bracciano and almost drowned. He obtained his final victories on 7 September 1944 to confirm his position as Mediterranean theatre top-scorer. He returned to the UK in October and became a production test pilot with Hawkers in January 1945. After a year there he attended the Empire Test Pilots’ School, Cranfield, before joining the RAF High Speed Flight in June 1946. This was followed by service at the A&AEE at Boscombe Down in March 1947. Having received a Czech War Cross in 1946, he was awarded an AFC in 1948. He resigned from the RAF in June 1948 joining Hawkers as a test pilot and becoming Chief Test Pilot in 1951. At the same time he joined the RAuxAF, commanding 615 Squadron, 1950-51. Having flown all the early Hawker jets, including the Hunter he was awarded an OBE in January 1953. On 7 September 1953 in a special all-red Hunter (WB 188), he captured the World Air Speed Record at 727.63 mph, following this on 19th with the 100 kilometre closed circuit record at 709.2 mph. In August 1955 he crash landed a Hunter at Thorney Island after a gun-firing problem and damaging his back. On 9 May 1956 in the P1099 he received further injuries during a hard landing and resigned his position in October 1956 after several months on his back.
