Open to reasonable offers. 1931-1932 Conn Transitional Alto Saxophone. One of approximately 15,300 transitional saxophones manufactured by conn 1931 -1934 production run, not clear how many alto, tenor, baritone and sopranos in that number. Info sourced from Saxophone.org sax serial number list. Currently in a generic student level alto case suitable for shipping. This instrument has been fully disassembled, cleaned and all lacquer removed using boiling water bath. Then cleaned inside and out. The body and keys were hand polished (no mechanical buffing) to remove decades of accumulated appreciation and oxidation. I believe the body has not been mechanically buffed as the art deco style engraving is still crisp although I am will to be corrected and don’t know the past history of this instrument. The resulting finish is bare brass which is taking on a natural patina with some iridescence in some locations. I hand polished all the parts to bring out it’s natural bare brass brilliance however this tends to fade. The shiny engraved bell in image 1 will eventually fade to a more subdued appearance as of 8/10/24 it is still shiny. The more protected portions of the body that had residual lacquer remained a bit more glossy than the sections with lacquer loss over the decades. I renovated vs restored this instrument working within the limits of what was working with so I did not consider going further with relacquer. Some dent work was performed by my local technician to reduce any of the accumulated bumps over time. There will be some noticeable mottling to the finish which will continue to progress it is enjoyed. There is some noticeable wear on the key rods where prior repair/ swaging was performed as this is over 90 year old sax with a long history. This sax is complete with regards to a fully and functional micro tuner neck and key work. All 12 tiny set screws are present and all other pivot screw and rods have been cleaned and lubricated when installed with Alisyn High viscosity lubricant or Pivot lubricant. No tenon plug included. The original mother of pearl touches and roller are intact. The rollers are free, cleaned and lubricated when installed. The swiveling thumb hook is complete and free and operates as designed. There is almost no wear to the neck strap ring All pads are new (3/2024) with Music Medic standard thickness Soft Feel pads with flat metal resonators or rivets on the smaller pods. As close as i could get to the original Conn Reso-pad design. All pads were installed with clear natural shellack and checked with a leak light for an air tight seal. All needle springs were removed and replaced with new blue steel needle springs. I opted to replace all spring as some of the original ones were a bit rusty and brittle. Rather than guess which other were good, I replaced the complete set. The Flat metal springs on keys like D, Eb, F and G# were in acceptable condition. All the retaining screws for these spring were removed and lubricated as were the springs when reinstalled. All keywork was aligned and checked for any drag or on the rods. Key work and posts were swaged to insure a secure fit and smooth operation. There is little play in any of the key work. The six keys that are secured with pivot and set screw system were adjusted for free motion. All key cups were checked for level against the tone holes and centered above the tone hole to the limits of the instrument . All regulation material was replaced with new, varieties include: red felt disks and bumpers, natural cork, Tech cork, Teflon sheet and tubes. In addition, Ultrasuede was applied under various keys to dampen key work and reduce noise. The double socket, Microtuner neck was fully disassemble, cleaned and lubricated. I took up some of the residual free play with a band of Teflon and a cushion of cork under the retainer ring. It fits securely inside the tenon. There is one small ding I left unattended on the right top side. The key work was regulated to remove almost all free play/delay and synchronize the keys. The sax features: a Front F3 pearl, a trill G# key on the lower stack, functioning and well sealing back door alt Eb.Note this design did not incorporate a linked left hand pinky table where the C#, B and Bb hold down the G# key. You could easily have a tab soldered to the G# to upgrade this keywork. I almost added this but decided to leave it in its original state. Lastly the saxophone was tuned against / within itself. Starting with the low Bb the micro tuner was adjusted to bring low Bb into tune so the complete bore was at the correct length. Working up the stack, each key was adjusted by adding or removing regulation material to bring that specific note into tune. A very nice final product in tune, smooth, tight feel and quiet operation. Spring tension adjusted to my preference so you may need to have that adjusted when you start playing it. I try not to use the term “perfect” in my descriptions as one can always fine fault. My goal was to renovate this sax to good playing condition not restore to new. For example the Bb/B key guard is a little out of square. .It is a balance between making it perfect versus functional. A little too much straightening and you knock off the key guard decided to stop before it got worse.. More photos or details on request. Mike
