COUNTESS CIS ZOLTOWSKABIOGRAPHY”The job of a successful creator is to be tuned into the future needs of the market. This knowledge cannot be acquired in any school. It is inborn.”-CISCis, whose full name is Countess Maria Assunta (“Cis”) Zoltowska, is a creator par excellence, whose life and work have been moulded by juxtapositions of hard realities and living fantasies. Born in a 13th-century Viennese castle, she grew up surrounded by culture and beauty. Her early childhood was divided between the social elite of prewar Vienna, and galloping through acres of wild forests, astride horses whose manes she braided with brilliantly-colored ribbons that whipped in the winds. The Countess was educated at the Sacred Heart Convent, where she earned her baccalaureate, and where she spent time in deep thought and meditation, tapping into her own creativerealms. Later, she studied mathematics and chemistry at the University of Vienna. Soon, however, came the German’s assassination of Austria’s Prime Minister Dolfuss, and the rattling of prewar tanks… Later, Cis recalls, “When I was living in Switzerland I received word from my mother, that the Russians had taken over and that 96 soldiers had moved into my family’s castle”. Further word told her, there was no more money coming out of there. Undaunted, the Countess recalls, “I had not been brought up to earn a living, but since it was something I had to do, why not do it right away”. The Countess began her entrepreneurial career in Switzerland, making “Cis” ceramics. But these were no ordinary ceramics. She developed a new process that permitted her to manufacture ceramics as thin as porcelain in beautiful shapes and colors. Her delicate demitasse cups and fine jewelry pieces immediately gained acclaim and sold for years throughout Switzerland. While visiting friends in Paris, Cis fell in love with this city and its appreciation of artistic originality and creativity. After moving there, however, she discovered that interest in ceramics was limited, so she turned her attention to custom jewelry. Her first inspiration was to hand-paint tiny horses on mother-of-pearl buttons. She took these buttons in her hand, to famous fashion designer Pierre Balmain, who became her first customer. Soon Jacques Fath created blouses to show off Cis’ unique art pieces. “Cis Jewelry” became all the rage, and the Countess found herself creating “Fantasy Jewelry” for all of the majorcouture houses in Paris, including Balenciaga, Givenchy, Dior, Nina Ricci, and more, as well as for Galitzine andCapucci of Rome. In the U.S., designers of the calibre of Galanos, Bill Blass and Louis Estevez sought out hercreations, as did Elisabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. “Countess Cis Zoltowska Jewelry” appeared repeatedly on the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and of Life Magazine. Her business flourished worldwide with such clients as Bon- wit Teller, Lord & Teylor, I.Magnin, Sacks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Harrod”s in London. Her private clients included the Duchess of Windsor, Elisabeth Taylor, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, to name but a few. Not only the Fashion Houses appreciated the Countess’ artistic talent in the use of vibrant colors, but also leading industries like Swarovski of Austria, manufacturer of ninety percent of the cut stones used in custom jewelry worldwide, followed her specific color instructions for the seasons to come and even paid “Cis” for the right to use hername in their advertising. Cis’ passion for color influenced all of Europe, and her jewelry set a global trend for thenext decade, and was copied by all… Silk manufacturers for the Paris Haute Couture even used her jewelry color schemes to create their high-fashion silk patterns. Growing business demands forced the Countess to divide her time between Paris and Bangkok. While in Bangkok, Cis created and manufactured a line of ready-to-wear “Haute Couture” (the first ever) using Thai-Silk fabrics of brilliant colors unequalled anywhere else. Soon Cis produced an original collection of “Hostess-Gowns” and “Cocktail-nsembles” for distribution around the world, following a precedent already set by her jewelry. While exhibiting at the International Trade Fair in San Francisco, Cis was invited to visit Los Angeles, and, oncemore, she fell in love…this time with the City of Angels, where, finally, in 1968, she moved, leaving behind the downfallof the De Gaulle regime. Her new surroundings inspired yet another venture, the creation of large, hand-painted silk Wall-Hangings which, inturn, led directly to her painting canvasses for needlepoint Once again the “avant garde” leader of a new trend, topDepartment Stores like Bullock’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bonwitt Teller, Marshall Field’s and all needlepoint storesthroughout the U.S., Canada, Australia and Japan sold Cis Zoltowska creations. “The Rolls Royce” of needlepointdesigns. Today the Countess is preparing to unveil her latest collection…this time a fabulous array of very special”Fragrances”, for women and for men. Each fragrance composed with the knowledge of a chemist and the inspiration of an “Artist”. Cis is both. Thanks to her years of experience amidst the sophisticated circles of the Paris Fashion World, she creates these rare”Perfumes”, that are totally unique in today’s market. Each perfume contains up to 45 of the finest natural essences and oils imported from France and the World. While the Industry’s general fragrance content averages up to 30%, Countess Cis perfumes have the luxury of 80 to 85% pure fragrances, the rest only pure alcohol, and no water. The Countess makes all her perfumes personally. To compliment her special fragrance collection, Cis has created an entire line of gorgeous, hand-fashioned glass “Perfume Bottles”. Our archives feature four distinct pieces, each representing different artistic mediums. The first piece is a well-proportioned, large artwork measuring 51″ x 41″, and it’s in excellent condition. Painted on canvas using what we believe to be a combination of stencil and brushwork, it has not been stretched for easier shipping. Once mounted on stretcher bars, any creases will vanish, revealing its full beauty. This vibrant piece adds color and energy to any space, and it is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The second piece is an artwork on board, featuring a lemon tree and an orange tree set against a striking background. The board measures 19 5/8″ x 15 3/4″, and the artist’s signature appears on the lower right. The third piece, believed to be a self-portrait in sketch form, depicts the countess on a balcony overlooking a lush Californian/Mexican garden, filled with greenery and striking architecture. It measures 15 3/4″ x 19 5/8″, with the original ‘crude’ hanging ribbon still attached on the back. A faint signature is visible in the bottom right corner. The fourth piece is a silk painting featuring two birds gracefully circling the moon and sea. It measures 28″ x 14″ and is signed by the artist in the lower right corner, though there is some fabric damage over the signature.
