They block lower airflow which is below windshield level. Typically this airflow is channeled along the plastic body panels and hits you in your torso creating pressure and turbulence. By deflecting this air to the sides it gives a more calm cockpit and keeps cold air off of your body in cooler weather so you can be more comfortable and extend your riding season!
