Japanese Salt Water Cultured White-Pink Rosé Pearl Necklace, 18″ Single Strand with 14K Yellow Gold Clasp – Brand New, Been in Our Safe for 25 Years! Our salt water, or Akoya, pearls are cultured from Japanese waters. They are a rare and beautiful find as our stock has been safely kept in a vault for over 25 years. This safekeeping means that our pearls carry no risk of radiation caused by the 2011 Tsunami that struck the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. This beautiful single strand necklace is made up of White-Pink Rosé pearls that are 7½ – 8mm in size and cultured from Japanese waters. The necklace is 18″ in length and closes with a 14K Yellow Gold clasp.We welcome offers on our eligible listings. By the same token, a lot of jewelers do not carry a large stock of pearls simple because they are not knowledgeable enough in purchasing or selling them. Please allow us to give you a crash course on Pearls! Oysters make pearls for the same reason they make shells. The outside of the oyster shell (mollusk) forms a protective armor while the inside of the shell has a shiny layer of mother-of-pearl. When a grain of sand or some other irritant enters the inside of the mollusk, the oyster immediately surrounds it with the mother-of-pearl cells to protect itself. Once these cells begin to multiply, they never stop trying and consequently, within a few years you have a natural pearl! Cultured pearls are not much different than natural pearls except that the “irritant”, better known as a nucleus, is put inside an oyster by a man in a surgical-like procedure, instead of by nature. Although the formation of the pearl after the insertion of the nucleus is totally natural and beyond the control of man, the pearls are called “cultured pearls”. Natural pearls are a thing of the past and most jewelers have not even seen on in their lives! The only “real” pearls available are cultured pearls and most of these come from Japanese waters where they take approximately two to three years to form. There are six main aspects to look for when buying pearls: 1. Luster – this is the easiest to determine. The more lustrous the pearls, the more valuable they are. 2. Shape – perfectly round pearls are the most valuable. It is hard enough for the poor oyster to keep producing all that nacre, but doing it in concentricity is just a fluke of nature. BAROQUE pearls are out-of-shape pears and are the least valuable. Do not be fooled by jewelers peddling them as “natural shapes”. 3. Spotting – there are very few pearls that are totally flawless. Spotting ranges from light to heavy and refers to bumps, holes, welts, etc. on the surface of the pearl. 4. Nacre thickness – this is very important as it affects the life of pearls, but most often, it is the hardest to determine. You have to look down the hole with a loupe. 5. Color – a factor that is totally up to an individual’s taste. Some like pinkish pearls (which are quite expensive), some like goldish pearls and yet some others prefer whitish colors. Most women already own a strand of white pearls, and at the same time there are a lot of fake white pearls on the market commonly sold as “Faux” pearls, thus cheapening their effect. 6. Size – this is probably the single item that affects the price of pearls the most. Due to the rarity of larger oysters, finding pearls of 8 mm and larger is becoming increasingly difficult and therefore you will find a huge jump in price once you get over the 8 mm size. Care of Pearls 1. Never clean pearls in an ultrasonic cleaner 2. Pearl-strands may be washed in cool water, but let them dry completely otherwise dirt will stick to the wet thread. 3. Although sometimes awkward, try to put on pearls after applying make-up. 4. Wipe off all make-up after each use by wiping gently with a soft, damp cloth.
