Karl Höfner KH330 (Antonius Stradivarius, 1718) – Custom Shop, Bubenreuth, Germany, 1960The Karl Höfner KH330 soloist violin is part of Höfner’s prestigious “Master” series and is among the finest of Karl Höfner’s professional instruments, ranking the third highest in the line-up of that time (immediately behind the KH332 and the super-expensive flagship KH339). The Master series violins were made using the most exquisite tone woods and were individual work of the firm’s top luthiers. These top-of-the line instruments were priced accordingly.Following is the description of the KH330 model in Karl Höfner’s catalogue of that time:”Antonius Stradivarius, 1718, superbly flamed one-piece back of carefully selected wood, old spruce top of best quality, finely flamed neck, varnished in reddish-yellow color and delicately shaded, excellent ebony trimmings.” This violin lives up to the description. The woods show beautiful grain, and the craftsmanship is flawless. The instrument is responsive and will impresses with its expressive voice, excellent balance across the entire range, rich resonance, and delicate complexity of the tone.Despite its respectable age, the violin is in very good condition. There are no cracks, repairs, seam separations, or other structural defects. Traces of prior use are minor – please review the images. The violin features top grade ebony fittings by Teller, an Aubert a Mirecourt bridge, and a Götz chinrest. The GDA strings are brand new Thomastik Dominant, and the E string is the gold-plated Pirastro Obligato.Comes with a luxurious Baker Street 4030 case which is brand new with tags. The case is elegant and practical – resembles famed Musafia cases. (For reference, this model – decorated with a Baker Street plaque – retailed for $269 on Amazon.)The following price references may be helpful in valuing this instrument:Based on Karl Höfner’s 1960 pricelist, the price of the KH330 model was 3.6 times greater than the price of their highly popular KH200 model, the entry level professional violin also produced at the Custom Shop and targeted at orchestra musicians and advanced students. (For reference, I have a KH200 currently listed at $1,550 violin only, and I see KH200 violins offered by some highly respected string shops in the $2,500-$3,000 range.) Based on Karl Höfner’s 1995 catalogue for Japan (the latest pricelist that I was able to locate – please see the last image), the KH330 was priced at JPY588,000, equivalent to approximately $5,500 at that time. Given that prices for higher quality musical instruments have significantly increased since 1995, due to labor and premium tone wood inflation, this data point gives a rough idea of what the current list price for this model might be, were it still in production. #V112
