the JNR class 9600 steam locomotive was produced primarily by kawasaki heavy industries from 1913 thru the late 1920s; the “kunroku” – old man mountain – as it was nicknamed was the first japanese mass produced locomotive….828 locomotives were produced and used exclusively in freight service, having a top operating speed of 65 kph. a few 9600s continued to be utilized in special circumstances into the 1960s…….most were supplanted with the arrival of the ubiquitous d51 in the 1930s…..the ki900 snow plow was a mcrae type plow first built in japan in 1928 as the ki500…..15 ki900 were first constructed in the 1940s and updated in the early 1960s by various in house JNR factories…..the ki916 was a product of the nagaoka marshaling yard, had a maximum operating speed as towed of 65 kph, and weighed 20 tons….the ki900 plows operated with extended wings, dragging the snow toward the centerline of the track where the companion rotary plows (ki600s), pushed by another locomotive would throw the snow away form the roadbed…..the ki900 series was obsoleted in the mid 1970s…..the yo5000 was a brake van design modified from yo3500 wagons to enable 85 kph operating sthepeeds on the mail line haul between osaka and tokyo…..100 wagons were reconfigured in the early 1962 by the JNR internal manufacturing facility at omiya……..obsolescence coincided with the containerization revolution of the mid 1980s…… Micro Ace is one of the dominant triumvirate of n scale manufactures in Japan – Kato and Tomix both being better known outside of Japan….Micro Ace clearly markets the broadest line of locomotives among the 3 and arguably features the finest detail work on their products. i acquired this model as part of a 4 set purchase of the micorace snowplow series from a private party in japan who averred that the sets were stored after purchase – not utilized……..upon arrival, the a0325 set appeared pristine; the outer box was relatively unblemished…..the inner jewel cases were unsullied except for a 1 inch split on the side of the top half of the locomotive jewel case and the models appeared comparatively little used……..the locomotive test run revealed 25% on the rheostat for n scale factored running speed and smooth, consistent operation considering the motor technology extant on this set’s release, 20 years ago; the wheel sets did exhibit a significant patina of oxidation which i cleansed with mineral spirits………the head lamp was functional although the dull orange of pre chip led technology…….as i had treated the locomotive wheel sets, i proceeded to use my sharp qtip/mineral spirits methodology on the plow and brake van…..however, the brake van tail lights failed to active under power……..i disassembled the model to discover a failure mode i had seen in other microace brake van models of similar current carrying design – the detachment of a formed copper spring whose function is to transfer current from the copper blades served by the trucks to the lighting pc board…..i decided that re-soldering was insufficient as the spring on the other side might similarly become detached……i decided to replace the wounded brake van with a new tomix yo5000 – tomix 8705 – caboose, which i had purchased some time ago in case of just such a requirement…….this yo5000 – running number 14781 – not only features led tail lights at both ends but also internal lighting……. the only accessory, a rapido coupler for the front end of the locomotive is present; instruction for its installation must be gleaned from detailed instructions in japanese with pictures for proper arrangement of the plow operations……..note the 2 small foam squares cushioning the plow wings which require removal before operation…..
