MINTY ANTIQUE AMERICAN HAND CUT CRYSTAL SILVER SMALL BOTTLE~FLASK~DECANTER MINTY ANTIQUE AMERICAN HAND CUT CRYSTAL SILVER ENGRAVED TOP VICTORIAN WHISKEY / SPIRITS DESIRIOUS SMALL BOTTLE / FLASK / DECANTER BY SIMPSON HALL MILLER ~ 1866-1898 Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. was a cutlery and silver hollowware manufacturer in Wallingford CT., founded in 1866. By 1895, the company operated large factories in Wallingford CT. and Montreal, Canada. In 1898, Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. became part of the International Silver Co. headquartered in neighboring Meriden, CT. Their designs have been exhibited since the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. In 1880-81, Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. was awarded the First Prize Medal competing with 44 other silver manufacturers from the United States and Europe at the Melbourne International Exhibition in Australia. The Melbourne International Exhibition was held from 1 October 1880 until 30 April 1881. It was the second international exhibition to be held in Australia, the first being held the previous year in Sydney. 1.459 million people visited the exhibition. This is a high quality, Maker marked, Antique American a 3-dimensional hand-blown cut crystal small Whiskey / Spirits bottle / decanter / flask / nipper flask with a hallmarked mushroom shaped sterling cap. This piece has Hallmark markings on the base of the sterling top: the Maker Mark for the rare maker Simpson, Hall, & Miller, STERLING, C3, and 8 marks. The silver collar at the top of the flask is marked STERLING. This is a heavy-duty piece of hand-blown cut crystal small flask / decanter, 4 3/4” tall x 2 1/2” wide x 1 3/8” thick and is heavy for its size at a hefty 7.1 ounces or 200 grams. Note the silver engraved top cap has a cork and fits the flask collar snugly. This flask is a desirous small decanter / flask size and could be carried upright in a jacket pocket. The cap secures the top to the flask securely and appears it would hold liquid if used; but the inside appears unused, so I have not tested it to avoid any water marks. The top and contents are not secure as a flask that had a screw cap or bayonet style twist top; but would be perfect for a bar, desktop, den, Man cave bottle / flask / nipper flask / decanter / container / decorator. The oval shaped hand cut crystal glass is hand blown into a mold with a couple of tiny bubbles in the glass, and the inside is clear and appears unused. The front and back of the flask have hand cut engraving of a large flower, stem and leaves at the base to create an eye appealing Victorian pattern. The bottom is ground flat that allows the flask to stand upright. The mushroom shaped cap has an interior cork and hand engraved initials in fancy script, which suggests this was a presentation piece as it appears to be in unused condition. The silver mushroom top has one small, hard to see shallow surface indentation that can be seen when rotating the top in the light. Note the silver collar of the neck has a ground flat surface of the glass top with no chips to the top edge. Inside the mouthpiece shows the adhesive material that was used to secure the silver band to the outside of the mouthpiece that shows lozenge shaped bubbles trapped between the glass and the silver collar have contracted and apparently created a thin hairline crack on the inside, as there is no outside damage to the top or sides of the mouthpiece; and both the flat top and inside of the mouthpiece are smooth when running your finger on the top or the inside, and doesn’t appear to affect the usability of the flask. This handsome, eye appealing, desirous small size hand blown, and hand cut crystal flask was crafted by Master glass artisans. Almost all flasks from this period show use, but this piece shows no use overall, and remains in minty condition; especially considering its extreme 125+ years of age. This would be perfect for any whiskey, spirits, flask, nipper flask collection, gambling, sportsman, hunter, outdoors man or sports fan; and can still be used by any gentleman or lady, or use as a gift, decorator piece in any Man cave, office, or den.
