1970’s Sailor Barney SR. Tattoo Flash Set. 11×14″ (Inch), 10 Black And White Sheets In Total. Old School, Vintage Style Tattoo Flash, (Copies). Please see my other auctions as more are available from this Master, Pre-Production Set. This is a set that Sailor Barney and Sailor Bill Killingsworth worked on sometime in the 1970’s Labeled “Coastal Tattoo Supply”, that was never released. I purchased the entire pre production set along with other flash when I purchased a large portion of Sailor Bills collection. The Original complete set is over 100 sheets printed on approximately 8 1/2 X 11″ Paper, (Hand Cut). Pictured on these Tattoo Flash Sheets are various designs including, Girl, Bikers, Skulls, Reapers,Harley Davidson, Ships, Butterflies, USA, Military, Japanese, Dragons, Dogs, Eagle, Tiger, ECT. The internet didn’t exist during their reign in the world of tattooing and there has been very little written about them since. However anyone that has crossed their paths or worked along side of them know that this family has helped lay the foundation of tattoo history in America. They are indeed the real deal. Sailor Barney Sr. (known as ‘SB’; deceased) was from Brooklyn New York. He spent years tattooing there along side the greats. It’s been said, that at one point Sailor Barney Sr. was the most profitable tattoo artist in the country. Throughout his career he sat down in many shops across the USA and traveled with the carnival circuit. He was the President of the East Coast Tattoo Club of America and was the creator of the Coastal Tattoo Machine. SB was married multiple times and had a sh*t ton of kids. It’s his “First Litter” of all boys that followed in his foot steps. All the boys started their careers in tattooing traveling the carnival circuit with SB. Sailor Fred was the most successful tattoo artist of the boys; making it his life long career. He owned his own shop of 20+ years in Rochester, New York, created his own line of tattoo machines, was the President of the Royal Tattoo Club, owner of the Tat-Kat Supply Company and founder of the First Traveling Tattoo Museum. It’s these items from the museum, his private collection, being sold off over the next few months. Sailor Barney Jr., best known as Howie The Hand (deceased), was also a successful tattoo artist. Most of his career was spent in CA. Although he took quite a few years away from the industry he came back to open a very successful shop in GA. Howie The Hand retired to upstate New York with his brothers before passing away. Captain Frog spent most of this tattooing career up in Maine before working alongside his brother in Sailor Fred’s freak show and grab joint. Frog didn’t make tattooing his main career and has since semi-retired in upstate New York. Tattoo Larry like the rest of the boys, tattooed along side of his father and brothers. He spent years in and out of the industry and still tattoos friends a few times a year. Larry’s success was selling equipment … a lot of it”.-Weebly ” Sailor Fred was born in Miami although grew up in Brooklyn, NY. As a young boy, he started as an apprentice; mixing ink, welding needles, cutting stencils, etc. In 1968 at the age of 15 years old, Sailor Fred starting traveling the carnival circuit with his father, Sailor Barney Sr. The following year he started tattooing along side his father from a small trailer traveling city to city. Sailor Fred would work the carnival circuit tattooing from April through October. During the winter months he would have misc. jobs and tattoo out of a EMT box. It was during this time in the early 1970’s that Sailor Fred designed his Signature machine. There were two versions available, aluminum and an iodized black. Due to an unforeseen circumstance, he sold his first set of casting plates to his friend Ernie C. In the fall of 1975 Sailor Fred opened his first shop, Golden Needle Tattoo Studio located at 116 Lyell Ave., Rochester, NY 14608. Sailor Fred continued tattooing at the large fairs along side his father, Sailor Barney Sr. and many times, his dear friend Tat-2 Tony. By 1986, Golden Needle Tattoo Studio was thriving. Sailor Fred purchased a one banner show, Clara the Nuclear Error and traveled two spring through fall seasons with a carnival show along with tattooing from a trailer. Sailor Barney Sr. managed the Golden Needle Tattoo Studio while Sailor Fred was traveling. In the winter of 1987 Sailor Fred sold Clara The Nuclear Error and spent the winter building a 100’ ten banner freak-show/sideshow with the help of his brother, Captain Frog. Sailor Fred traveled the carnival circuit for two seasons before selling it in 1990 to make the Golden Needle Tattoo Studio his main priority. In 1990 Sailor Fred moved the Golden Needle Tattoo Studio down the street to 252 Lyell Ave. With 3-4 years he opened up his second location Golden Needle South located at 51 Bridge St. Corning NY 14830. In 1997 due to health issues, Sailor Fred closed his shop in Rochester, NY for good. Golden Needle South remained open until closing in 2013. Sailor Fred is now retired. Miss Kat his long time girlfriend owns and operates Tat-Kat Tattoo Studio in Springwater, NY where Sailor Fred can be reached. Family Sailor Fred comes from a family of tattoo artists, making him the 3rd generation of tattoo artist in the Steinhart Family. He is the youngest son of Sailor Barney Sr.’s 1st family. (Sailor Barney Sr. was the original creator of the Coastal machine). All three of Sailor Fred’s brothers: Howie the Hand (deceased), Tattoo Larry and Captain Frog tattooed periodically through out their lives.”-Weebly
