Examine pictures closely…. if you have questions, ask before you buy. Mary Agnes Murdoch was given this book and the accompanying certificate on April 21, 1892 in Liverpool, England. It was presented to her by the Liverpool Mayoress on behalf of the Liverpool Branch of Great Britain’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). Mary Agnes Murdoch was an individual prize winner in the RSPCA’s essay competition in 1892. The RSPCA was founded in 1824, making it the oldest animal welfare organization in existence. It was given Royal status by Queen Victoria, who was the Society’s patron. The RSPCA’s focus early on was on bringing animal cruelty offenders to justice. The Animal World magazine was first published in October 1869. It had monthly editions and bound annuals, some of which were given as prizes to essay competition winners. The Society’s Ladies’ Committee played a very important part in the development and promotion of the Animal World and the essay competition. The annual essay competition on “Man’s duty of kindness to animals” began in 1870 after the Ladies’ Committee of the RSPCA called a meeting of London schoolmasters and schoolmistresses in order to discuss how best to introduce a systematic teaching of humane treatment of animals into all schools. It was decided to hold an annual essay writing competition, with certificates and prizes being awarded. The Animal World carried this article in the May 1870 edition: “On the 25th ultimo a meeting of schoolmasters and mistresses was held at the Society’s building, 105 Jermyn Street, for the purpose of discussing the best means for introducing into schools a systematic education of children in the humane treatment of animals. The Earl of Harrowby, the Right Rev. Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, the Rev. Prebendary Jackson, Mr Smithies, Mr Davidson, and two or three other teachers addressed a crowded meeting, when it was resolved that the substance of the following circular should be forwarded to 150 schools of London:- ‘I am desired to inform you that the Committee are prepared to give a prize to the boy, being a member of your school, who shall compose the best essay or paper on the Duty of Kindness towards Animals, the competition to be open to all the scholars under your charge. As upwards of 150 schools will be invited to compete for a similar premium, the Committee beg to ask that you do them the favour to act as sole Judge of the merits of the said essays or papers, and to forward the name of the successful competitor, with his MS., to me on or before the 21st of May next. The several essays from the several schools will then be placed before our Judges, and the two best selected therefrom for further and principal rewards. At the Annual meeting of the Society, to be held on the 28th day of May next, at Willis’s rooms, St James’s Square, at two o’clock, your pupil entitled to our premium, will be presented by the Earl of Harrowby with a handsome volume containing an inscription; and the writers of the two best essays, selected from the entire collection, will, in addition, be presented with more costly gifts; it being understood that all papers obtaining such rewards shall become the property of the society.’ Soon the competition was open to both girls and boys in schools nationwide, and it ran until ceasing in 1971. In 1883, five hundred schools took part – six years later this figure had risen to 1,000, and 40,000 essays were submitted. In 1924 the number of essays written was over 253,000.
