Offered here is a – Hard to Find – Retro PYREX likely from the late 1980’s – Medium-Size, Crystal-Clear-Glass, Light-Blue-Letter & Graduations, Open-L-Handle, MICROWAVE MEASURE release, Measuring-Cup – MPN-516 – 2-Cup 500-mL 16-oz 1-Pint – in NEAR MINT – most-excellent, barely-used condition. GREAT for Collectors! ALL surfaces are super-highly-glossy, shiny, and clean. There are no obvious chips, cracks, nor flea-bites; No significant scratches nor rubs; No hazing nor stains. There are visible tiny air bubbles within the glass; minimal fine rubs, scratches of incidental contact marks; visible indentations on the base where seated during its manufacture. This Measuring-Cup has an open handle, angled downwards (like a flipped-L), and a thumb-rest-depression at the top of the handle. There are Light-Blue Colour graphics (minimal fleck colour-loss, crisp & clear, glossy & shiny, no fade) – manufacturer’s information fired-on beneath the spout; metric and imperial graduations on either side along with the Product name. SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION – PYREX Measuring-Cups – My greatest weakness!!! USA & CANADIAN – great to collect!!! ALL Major Household-Glassware Manufacturers – CORNING-PYREX, Anchor-Hocking FIRE-KING, Hazel-Atlas, McKee-GLASBAKE and more – released their own lines of measuring cups & bowls to be competitive in the markets with consumers – each released some unique items as well as comparable items. US Measuring Cups – As the PYREX measuring-cups evolved – the standard sizes were always – Small – 1-Cup, Medium – 1-Pint 2-Cup, Large – 1-Quart 4-Cup – even when designs and MPNs changed. PYREX released its first measuring cup in the USA in 1926 – crystal-clear, with a spout, embossed graduations, rounded D-handle, level top edge, MPN of 8, 1-Cup size. A change to this form came in 1932 – where the handle was now an angular, thumb-rest-flat-top D-shape, and the spout was a little down-turned. In addition to the 1-Cup measuring cup, 1937 introduced a tall spouted, level top edged, measuring glass – PYREX Graduate 598 – 16-oz, embossed; and PYREX Graduate-Red-Markings 597 – 32-oz, red graduations. 1938 saw a minor change to the measuring-cup – the handle was again a rounded D-handle style. BIG CHANGES came in 1941 – RED MARKINGS; 3 WET Measuring-Cups and 1 DRY Measuring-Cup (MPN 18). Wet Measuring-Cups came in Small – 1-Cup 508, Medium – 1-Pint 516, Large – 1-Quart 532; the spout now molded & elevated; the handle angular, flat-top, D-Handle; PYREX written beneath the spout in thin lettering. The Dry Measuring-Cup Small – 1-Cup 18 with a level top edge, no spout, rounded D-handle; PYREX written beneath the spout in thin lettering. The design had minor adjustments to streamline the same basic form over the years but, the next change came in about 1955 where PYREX was now printed vertically (stacked letters) in open print on the side of each measuring-cup. The dry measure was no longer available somewhere between 1950-5. The next change came in 1980 – PYREX was now written sideways, coloured-in lettering, on the side of each measuring cup; the following year, the print of PYREX was still sideways but in open-print. A new addition came in 1982 – a 1-QT liquid measure 532-S – with a squared-off handle and PYREX now written above the graduations, horizontally – coloured-in. The second ½ of 1984 brought about changes to the standard measuring cups – all now had coloured-in lettering written above the graduations; the handle was open and angled downwards, like a flipped-L. 1984 introduced the 2-QT 564 Mix ‘N’ Measure Bowl – a special offer in 1986 bundled a FREE 1-Cup in with a 2-QT Bowl. Blue-Graphics on PYREX – I’ll have to do a little more digging as a BLUE-Print PYREX was released …. In 1986 – CORNING released a new line of cookware items – Corning Microwave Plus Cookware. In that line of cookware were the Cook & Measure L-Handle (Measuring-Cup-Like) items – which had the light blue color graduations and graphics as well as Blue-Plastic Microwave-Storage covers – M-320 1-Quart and M-640 2-Quart – were the options available. Perhaps this was when the Medium-Size, Crystal-Clear-Glass with Light-Blue-Letter Graphics and graduations – Open-L-Handle – MICROWAVE MEASURE Measuring-Cup – MPN-516 – 2-Cup 500-mL 16-oz 1-Pint – was released as well. Metric – PYREX Measuring Cups were made in the U.S.A. having All Imperial Units OR Imperial & Metric Units – Metrication in Canada began in 1970; by the ~mid-1970’s Canadian products and imports required metric units. As for the CANADIAN measuring cups – the story will continue ….. Canadian Measuring Cups – Canadian Measuring Cups – PYREX-Corning items were produced in CANADA at Corning’s Leaside Plant, near Toronto, Ontario – from 1945-54. As for Measuring Cups – the first released in the US was the 1-Cup level edged and spouted embossed imperial measuring cup – MPN-8 in 1926 followed by revisions in 1932, then 1937 where the no-handle, measuring glasses PYREX Graduate 597 (32-oz) and PYREX Graduate 598 (16-oz) were released both having bright red Graduations and Information. In 1941 – Red Markings came to the 1-Cup Dry (18); Wet 1-Cup (508); 2-Cup (516); and 4-Cup (532) – all wet-cups of the same shape and style. HOWEVER – in Canada this progression was done differently. Their first Measuring Cups were the – All Imperial – Dry Level Edge MPN-18 and the Spouted-Wet MPN-508 – with embossed manufacturer’s information and graduations – some time after 1945. Some time after the release of the All Embossed Measuring Cups, the Red-Graphics Measuring Cups were released – likely in the early 1950’s – offering – All Imperial – Dry Level Edge MPN-18 and the Spouted-Wet MPN-508.
