He decided which art pieces were to be in the book. On some plates he gave directions on the procedures and quality standards to be pursued. Title: THE STUDIO (1954), 1955 PICASSO print. On the reverse side is a color offset lithograph print: COMPOSITION WITH CLOWNS.This unused, original bookplate was printed in 1955, overseen by the artist himself, during a retrospective period in his work. The print is also shown in a standard 11 by 14 double mat. It is included in this sale. This sale is for the print AND the white and gold double mat. Condition: NEW. Made in 1955, this print has been in careful storage since 1955 and is in the same condition as the day it was made but with a touch of age toning around the page edges. There is a small tear at the bottom that has been professionally repaired with acid free professional paper. PLEASE NOTE: The print is the entire page. The display sheet shows a touch of age toning. Abrams, Inc. of New York. Picasso himself gave his approval of this project. Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973), was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who lived most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by the German and Italian air forces at the behest of the Spanish nationalist government during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art. Picasso’s work is often categorized into periods, including the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also referred to as the Crystal period. Much of Picasso’s work of the late 1910s and early 1920s is in a neoclassical style, and his work in the mid-1920s often has characteristics of Surrealism. His later work often combines elements of his earlier styles. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art. Of this painting, Wilhelm Boeck wrote: Picasso’s series of Bathers, drawn at Cannes in 1927, shows us specimens of monsters: we get the impression that various parts of the human body have been stimulated by injections to produce grotesque excrescences. As far back as the early twenties Picasso had manifested a tendency toward such exaggerations in some paintings of oversized in relation to the figure as a whole, or to its tiny head; but then such disproportions were the result of exaggerated perspective foreshortenings. Cesare Brandi has established that the well-known Three Dancers of 1925 contains Surrealist elements, but there they still play a subordinate part. Here the human figure serves merely as the starting point; although certain segments can be identified as the head, the arms, the legs, and the breasts, these elements are arranged with Cubist freedom and linked together in a metaphoric pattern, so that they seem to grow out of each other. The result is something like an amoebic formation or some fantastic plant. Aesthetically, at least, we cannot help but admire the vitality and robustness of these characters. Picasso’s virtuosity in the simultaneous use of completely different stylistic means is part of the essence of his art. The value of any of his works does not depend on its style: what matters is the experience captured in it.
