Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a rare variant of the 1950’s era Shure 55S microphone. Shure Brothers sold under license it’s 55S to only a couple different American companies at the time and Stromberg Carlson was one of them. This MC-41 is a 1958 model and comes with the period short cable and data sheet as seen in the pictures provided as well as the beautiful black mic case in which to store the contents. The 55S was also sold under the Bogen and DuKane label. Stromberg Carlson was based out of Rochester, NY at that time and was a high quality manufacturer of electronics and other goods such as radio and a whole slew of audio equipment. Pic # 2 shows an old Shure catalog I have with this very model and it’s basic characteristics. As you can see the satin chrome body shows virtually no wear with zero corrosion, scuff marks or scratches. This mic is an absolute gem and one of the very nicest examples of a 55S I have ever come across. The ribs are straight and free of dents or fractures. The Royal Blue silk screens shows zero fading or holes and look absolutely gorgeous. This was obviously used in a smoke free environment. Often these old 55 mics are stained with tobacco as smoking was quite popular back in the day. The joint mechanism works perfectly with plenty of tension and a wide degree of tilt. The label looks excellent and you can see by the serial number that it’s a 1958 model. I secure the element on these mics as they are always loose from years of use. The element will cause a ton of unwanted feedback if not secured inside so I do that with every 55S that comes my way. No issues. It should be noted that this mic is in excellent working condition with it’s original cardioid dynamic element but can also be used for display or prop purposes if needed. This mic was originally intended for singing and broadcasting. This MC-41 has the adjustable impedance switch for low, medium and high impedance. This mic has more of a clear tone that’s more mid range and just the right amount of bass. Excellent uni-directional characteristics as well. I would rate it an conservative 9 +++ cosmetically on a scale of 1 – 10. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE…USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY. The short 7 foot cable is in excellent operating condition and is quite nice physically speaking. It has the standard Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment and all guitar amplifiers. Cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. You can always use a longer cable if needed but this will be ideal for situations where your audio equipment is closer. A data sheet of the 55S is also included and in excellent condition. You’ll see it sitting in the case with the mic in pic # 1. It has a ton of technical info on this mic and makes for good reading. Also, the mic comes with the vintage black vinyl mic case that is in very nice physical condition and a great place to store the contents with more than enough room inside. There are two new foam pads that will keep the mic safe and snug…free of damage. The mic case has beautiful aluminum trim and a carrying handle as well as two locking mechanisms to keep the top lid closed and secure. The original key is included and works for both locking mechanisms. Case is appx 14 inches wide X 9 inches deep X 3 inches tall. A great accessory that really pop with this classic mic. A great conversation piece anywhere it sits or is used in the home, studio or office. If you need the finest example there is….this is your girl.
